Collection Historical Note
Roman Catholic author, Hilaire Belloc (1870 - 1953) was a dominant literary figure in the first half of twentieth-century England. As a member of Parliament, Belloc was an outspoken proponent of radical social and economic reforms. As a Catholic polemic, he challenged the interpretation of history that had influenced how England viewed the role of the Catholic Church in its development as a nation and a people. As a historian, biographer and poet, he produced over 150 books and enumerable articles including The Path to Rome (1902), The Bad Child's Book of Beasts (1896) and Europe and the Faith (1920). Belloc was well known for his literary collaboration with G. K. Chesterton with whom he produced several satirical novels.
